Is Virtual Therapy in Utah Right for You?
Written by Taylor Lopez Boodooram, SSW
For many women of color navigating busy schedules, burnout, or life transitions, getting to a weekly therapy session in person isn’t always possible. Whether you’re managing family responsibilities, working long hours, or living outside a major city, therapy shouldn’t feel out of reach.
That’s where virtual therapy comes in. But if you’ve never tried it before, you might be wondering: Does it actually work? Will it feel awkward? Can I really connect through a screen?
At Manaaki Mental Health, we offer secure virtual therapy to clients all across Utah. In this post, I’ll walk you through what online therapy is, who it works well for, and how to decide if it’s the right fit for you.
Virtual therapy—also called online therapy or telehealth—is simply therapy that happens via a secure video platform rather than in person. At Manaaki Mental Health, we use a HIPAA-compliant portal where you can meet with me from your phone, tablet, or computer from anywhere in Utah.
It’s still the same quality of care—same techniques, same relationship-building, same safety—but with added flexibility and convenience.
Here are a few signs that virtual therapy could be a good fit:
One of the biggest concerns I hear is, “Can I really feel connected over video?”
The answer? Yes.
In fact, many of my clients tell me they’re surprised by how personal it still feels. We talk, reflect, cry, laugh, and grow, just like we would in person. Virtual therapy doesn’t dilute connection; it just shifts the setting.
What matters most is that you feel safe and supported. I bring the same presence, care, and cultural attunement to online sessions as I do in my Taylorsville office.
While virtual therapy has a lot of benefits, it’s not ideal for everyone. Here’s what to keep in mind:
You’ll need a stable internet connection and a private space where you can speak freely. If you share your home or live with family, we’ll work together to find solutions (like car sessions, headphones, or phone sessions in a quiet room).
Therapy is your time. Make sure your environment allows you to focus without interruption. Let your household know when you’re in session, just like you would if you were in my office.
You don’t have to be a tech expert. I’ll walk you through everything, and we’ll do a test if needed. Many clients find video therapy easier than they expected!
Here’s how online therapy works at Manaaki Mental Health:
Our time together will be focused entirely on you, with space to talk, process, and build practical tools, whether you’re curled up on the couch or taking a quiet moment in your parked car.
“I didn’t think I’d like it at first, but now I prefer it…it saves me time and still feels really connected.”
“It actually helped me open up more being in my own space.”
“It’s been a game changer for my busy schedule.”
Many clients love the flexibility and appreciate being able to show up just as they are, even if they’re in cozy clothes, in their car, or having a tough day.
As a therapist who specializes in supporting women of color in Utah, I know how hard it can be to make space for your own healing. You’re often showing up for everyone else like your family, your work, your community.
Virtual therapy can be one way to start showing up for you, without having to overextend yourself even further. Whether you’re in Salt Lake City, Provo, Ogden, or a rural part of the state, you deserve care that’s accessible, affirming, and rooted in who you are.
Trying something new—especially something vulnerable like therapy—can feel scary. If you’re not sure whether virtual therapy is right for you, we can talk it through together in a free consultation.
There’s no pressure, no judgment—just a chance to ask questions, explore your options, and see what feels right.
If you’re looking for a trauma-informed, culturally grounded therapist who offers virtual therapy across Utah, I’d be honored to work with you. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning to it with fresh needs, I’ll meet you where you are.
