That’s where virtual therapy comes in. But if you’ve never tried it before, you might be wondering: Does it actually work? Will it feel awkward? Can I really connect through a screen?

What Is Virtual Therapy?

Virtual therapy—also called online therapy or telehealth—is simply therapy that happens via a secure video platform rather than in person. At Manaaki Mental Health, we use a HIPAA-compliant portal where you can meet with me from your phone, tablet, or computer from anywhere in Utah.

It’s still the same quality of care—same techniques, same relationship-building, same safety—but with added flexibility and convenience.

Who Might Benefit from Virtual Therapy?

Here are a few signs that virtual therapy could be a good fit:

  • You’re balancing a lot: Whether you’re parenting, caregiving, studying, or working long hours—online therapy can eliminate drive time and childcare stress.
  • You live outside of Salt Lake County: If you’re in a more rural or underserved area, virtual sessions give you access to culturally informed care without having to travel far.
  • You feel safer or more at ease at home: For some clients—especially those dealing with anxiety or trauma—virtual sessions allow you to open up more easily in your own space.
  • You have a busy or irregular schedule: Virtual therapy offers more flexible time options for those who work non-traditional hours or shift-based jobs.

Is It Still Personal and Effective?

One of the biggest concerns I hear is, “Can I really feel connected over video?”

The answer? Yes.

In fact, many of my clients tell me they’re surprised by how personal it still feels. We talk, reflect, cry, laugh, and grow, just like we would in person. Virtual therapy doesn’t dilute connection; it just shifts the setting.

You’ll need a stable internet connection and a private space where you can speak freely. If you share your home or live with family, we’ll work together to find solutions (like car sessions, headphones, or phone sessions in a quiet room).

2. Privacy + Boundaries

Therapy is your time. Make sure your environment allows you to focus without interruption. Let your household know when you’re in session, just like you would if you were in my office.

3. Comfort with Tech

You don’t have to be a tech expert. I’ll walk you through everything, and we’ll do a test if needed. Many clients find video therapy easier than they expected!

What Does a Virtual Session Look Like?

Here’s how online therapy works at Manaaki Mental Health:

  1. You’ll receive a secure, private link to join your session through either Zoom or Google Meet, both of which are HIPAA-compliant platforms we use to protect your privacy.
  2. A quick download may be needed if you haven’t used the platform before. Most clients find setup simple and user-friendly—we’re happy to walk you through it.
  3. You can log in from your phone, tablet, or computer, wherever you feel most comfortable.
  4. Once we’re connected, we’ll settle in and begin the session—just like we would in person.

Our time together will be focused entirely on you, with space to talk, process, and build practical tools, whether you’re curled up on the couch or taking a quiet moment in your parked car.
